Sunday mornings

At Philpott, we believe that we are called first and foremost to worship God. For us, one of the main ways that we respond to this call is by gathering together on Sunday mornings to pray, sing, and hear God’s word. Jesus promised his followers, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them” (Matthew 18:20). We believe that as we gather together for worship, Jesus is really present among us in spirit. For this reason, worship is much more than a time to hear a comforting message or to sing songs with loved ones—worship is a time when we as the church are present to God, and God is present to us in a unique way.

Our worship style is fairly casual; people wear whatever clothes they feel comfortable in, we sing old and new songs accompanied by contemporary instruments like drums and guitars, and we often pray together in an unscripted, conversational way. Don’t worry if you don’t know any church songs, the lyrics are projected on a screen so that everyone can sing together.

A significant part of our service includes a sermon, which is half-hour (or so) talk where one of our pastors teaches about a passage of scripture and helps us to apply that passage to our lives today.

We also participate in communion or eucharist on the first Sunday of each month. This is a simple meal of bread and wine - or, in our case, a cracker and grape juice - in which we remember that Jesus offered himself on our behalf so we could be welcome as guests at his table. In our tradition, communion is “open” meaning anyone who believes in Jesus is welcome to participate, whether or not they consider themselves to be members of any church.

Beyond sunday

In addition to Sunday mornings, we also worship together during occasional mid-week prayer events and at special events during seasons like Advent, Pentecost, and Lent. These events often draw on a wide variety of historic Christian traditions that inform the ways that we pray and worship together, but we always aim to worship in ways that are informed and guided by scripture.
